For over 150 years, the Sagaponack General Store and Post Office served as the civic heart of its historic farming and maritime community. After closing in 2020, the site was reimagined through a collaborative effort focused on restoration, stewardship, and community reconnection. The project restored the building’s historic civic presence, reconstructing its front porch, and creating a welcoming public threshold. In partnership with local officials, the landscape team implemented traffic-calming measures. Including an elevated crosswalk, expanded planting areas, integrated seating, and improved pedestrian access.

The scope expanded to unify adjacent parcels into a cohesive one-acre campus. Permeable parking, staff offices, and a sequence of gardens reconnect the site to surrounding farmland. A productive garden supports the store with organic vegetables and flowers while fostering pollinator habitat.

Using salvaged historic materials and over 1,200 native and coastal-adapted plantings, the design strengthens habitat, improves circulation, and restores the site as a vibrant civic landscape where agriculture, ecology, and community life intersect.
