Guided by the design concept of ‘a garden by the sea,’ the mission of the design team was to restore the historic six-acre Canoe Place Inn, transforming it into a versatile space that includes a wedding venue, boutique hotel, five cottages, restaurant, wellness center, outdoor swimming pool, and guest parking areas.
The project also included the activation of Phase One of a community park, the rehabilitation of eroded bluffs and shorelines along the Shinnecock Canal, and the transformation of a defunct nightclub into a boathouse-inspired community. The Inn and cottages posed a fixed challenge requiring the design team to address a 30-foot elevation change.
A flat area adjacent to the Inn became a focal point for various uses, including a pedestrian entranceway from the parking area, a lawn and garden room serving as an extension of the café terrace, and a swimming pool situated in proximity to the wellness center. The sustainable plant palette featuring native and resilient coastal plantings defines a series of programmatic rooms and pathways. The outcome is a world-class Inn featuring dynamic programming and event spaces, fostering a revitalized connection to the community, the canal and the bays beyond.
